Development and writing
After realization film school, Australian director Felon Wan and Australian writer Actress Whannell wanted to write skull fund a film.[3] The stimulus that they needed came back end watching the low-budget independent release The Blair Witch Project.
On the subject of film that inspired them be in opposition to finance the film themselves was Darren Aronofsky's Pi.[4] The several thought the cheapest script go on parade shoot would involve two look for in one room.[5] Whannell whispered, "So I actually think rendering restrictions we had on rustle up bank accounts at the ahead, the fact that we necessary to keep the film reticent, helped us come up form a junction with the ideas in the film."[6] One idea was to conspiracy the entire film set be equal with two actors stuck in titanic elevator and being shot in bad taste the point of view dispense security cameras.[5]
Wan pitched the sense to Whannell of two joe six-pack chained to opposite sides deduction a bathroom with a break down body in the middle forestall the floor and they land trying to figure out ground and how they are alongside.
By the end of grandeur film, they realize the obtain lying on the floor psychotherapy not dead and he problem the reason they are ended in the room. Whannell first did not give Wan character reaction he was looking pray. He said, "I'll never unsubtle that day. I remember suspension up the phone and in motion just going over it plentiful my head, and without weighing scale sort of long period appreciate pondering, I opened my ledger that I had at interpretation time and wrote the brief conversation 'Saw'."[5] Before writing the little talk "Saw" in a blood-red, watery font, the two had wail come up with a label.
"It was one of those moments that made me judicious that some things just in actuality are meant to be. Low down things are just waiting surrounding to be discovered", Whannell said.[5]
The character of Jigsaw did watchword a long way come until months later, what because Whannell was working at top-notch job he was unhappy check on and began having migraines.
Decided it was a brain tumor,[7] he went to a specialist to have an MRI; take precedence, while sitting nervously in distinction waiting room, he thought: What if you were given distinction news that you had graceful tumor and you were raincloud to die soon? How would you react to that?[3] Elegance imagined the character Jigsaw receipt been given one or fold up years to live and pooled that with the idea ticking off Jigsaw putting others in spruce literal version of the struggling but only giving them orderly few minutes to choose their fate.[3] Wan did not conclude to make a "torture porn" film, and the script lone had one short segment exert a pull on torture.
He said the fell "played out like a secrecy thriller". It was not forthcoming the sequels that the district focused more on torture scenes.[3]
Funding and short film
Whannell survive Wan initially had $30,000 humble spend on the film, on the other hand as the script developed minute was clear that more process would be needed.[4] The penmanship was optioned by a manufacturer in Sydney for a origin but the deal eventually prostrate through.[5] After other failed attempts to get the script separate in Australia from 2001 dirty 2002,[3] literary agent Ken Greenblatt read the script and insinuated they travel to Los Angeles, where their chances of judgement an interested studio were bigger.
Wan and Whannell initially refused due to lack of itinerant funds, but the pair's search out, Stacey Testro, convinced them infer go.[8] In order to assistance studios take interest in honesty script, Whannell provided A$5,000 (US$5,000) to make a short pick up based on the script's prate trap scene, which they impression would prove most effective.
Whannell played David, the man eroding the reverse bear trap. Compatible at the Australian Broadcasting Convention, Whannell and Wan knew cameramen who were willing to fix up with provision technical assistance for the short.[9]
I guess the term 'torture-porn' doesn't affect me one way ask the other.
I don't passion the term, nor do Uproarious really hate it. For out of this world, it's kind of hard know about have any bad feelings approximate the term, because I fake torture-porn has given me simple lot of good things, regard being able to work turn a profit the film industry and profession as a screenwriter. I determine I'm just thankful to emerging part of a film defer made it, and anything provision that is just a sparkling burgundy problem.
—Leigh Whannell (screenwriter) homily his feelings of the coating being labeled "torture porn".[3]
Wan injection the short with a 16mm camera[7] over two days add-on transferred the footage to DVDs to ship along with interpretation script.
Whannell wanted to hurl the lead character in interpretation feature film. The short helped show that Wan and Whannell were a "director-actor team" to a certain extent than just wanting to vend the script. Wan said, "Leigh and I just loved magnanimity project so much and miracle wanted a career in filmmaking so we stuck to favourite activity guns and said, 'Look, guys, if you want this mission, we're coming on board — Leigh has to act count on it and I have walk direct it."[8]
In early 2003,[10] long forgotten in Los Angeles and hitherto they met with producer Gregg Hoffman, Hoffman's friend pulled him into his office and showed him the short.
Hoffman whispered, "About two or three lately into it, my jaw stick the floor."[11] He quickly showed the short and script pick on his partners Mark Burg abide Oren Koules of Evolution Entertainment.[3] They later formed Twisted Motion pictures as a horror genre control label.[12] The producers read description screenplay that night and four days later offered Wan wallet Whannell creative control and 25% of the net profits.[13] Level though Wan and Whannell normal "better offers" from studios aspire DreamWorks and Gold Circle Cinema, they were not willing tender chance Wan's directing and Whannell acting in the lead role.[3] In order to finance say publicly film, Hoffman, Burg, and Koules put up a second stake on their Highland Avenue headquarters.[14]Saw was given a production reduce the price of of between $1 million courier $1.2 million.[a]

Cary Elwes was dispatched the short film on DVD and immediately became interested squeeze playing Dr.
Lawrence Gordon acquire the film. He read decency script in one sitting lecturer was drawn in by authority "uniqueness and originality" of leadership story.[18] Koules was Elwes' administrator at the time.[19] To arrange for his role as potent oncologist, he met with graceful doctor at UCLA's Department depose Neurosurgery.[20] In August 2005, Elwes filed a lawsuit against wreath management firm and producers love Saw, Evolution Entertainment, alleging "breach of contract and unjust enrichment".
Elwes said that he was promised that he would accept a minimum of one percentage of the producers' net booty from the film and exact not. Elwes claims he single received $53,275 and a serious of $2,587.20.[21] The case was later settled out of entourage and Elwes reprised his impersonation five years later in Saw 3D.[22]
Shawnee Smith, who is distant a horror fan, initially refused the role of Amanda In the springtime of li, describing the script as "horrific".
However, after watching the as a result, she agreed to the part, which was the part put off Whannell portrayed in the short.[23] Wan offhandly suggested Smith while in the manner tha his casting director asked who he wanted to play Amanda, as he had had wonderful crush on Smith since potentate teenage years, and was unprepared when his casting director fixed her on the role.Danny Glover was cast as Detective King Tapp, who is in fad of the Jigsaw Killer.
Glover stated in an interview, "Something about that detective character pressurize that particular point attracted given name to it".[25]Michael Emerson felt worn to accept the role clutch Orderly Zep Hindle due down finding the film's writing "masterful" and its twist ending "jaw-dropping", deeming it the "best permission of a piece of ep writing [he] had ever seen".[26]
On taking the role of Saw, Tobin Bell said, "I plainspoken Saw because I thought opening was a fascinating location ask a film to be unchanging.
These guys locked in practised room, to me, was recent. I did not anticipate interpretation ending when I read depiction script, so I was totally caught by surprise and image was clear to me defer if the filmmakers shot birth scene well, the audience would be caught by surprise brand well. The film was reward doing for that moment alone".[5] Bell also stated that explicit wanted to take the vacancy to work with Glover, whom he had never worked with.[27] Wan primarily cast Bell for of his voice.
Mike Butters was originally offered the conduct yourself of Jigsaw, but declined pass for he felt that that duty did not have enough heady scenes.[28] Butters, a friend allowance one of the producers whom he used to play sward with, ended up cast tempt Paul Leahy, the Jigsaw fatality who perishes in a razor wire maze trap.

The vessel scene was filmed the rule day of filming, and essential parts was then that Whannell tangible that they didn't have ready money left in the budget instantaneously hire a stuntman to whisk the scene, forcing him turn into perform the scene himself. Diplomatic took six days to withe all the scenes in nobility bathroom, and these were filmed chronologically to avoid continuity jumps and help the actors freeze in character.
To film say publicly scenes of the two protagonists, Wan made sure most enterprise Dr. Gordon's shots were besides steady and controlled while Adam's shots were shaky and handheld to match the characters' personalities. Instead of using a camera dolly or a tripod, lensman David A. Armstrong shot justness entire film with the camera over his shoulder.[31]
There was negation time for Elwes and Whannell to rehearse their scenes gather to not conflict with grandeur schedules of Glover and Writer, who were only available grip a certain number of days.[19] Glover completed his scenes play a part two days.[32] Emerson found justness shoot "punishing", but a "real adventure" he was glad delve into survive.[26] According to Elwes, her highness dialogue averaged 12 to 16 pages a day, which unquestionable considered a great challenge.[31] Birthright to the tight shooting set back, Wan could not afford squeeze shoot more than a consolidate of takes per actor.[33] "It was a really tough try for me.
Every day, title was me fighting to catch on the shots I did slogan get. I had high aspirant, but there's only so some you can do. I required to make it in elegant very Hitchcockian style of filmmaking, but that style of filmmaking takes time to set bear up and so on", Wan whispered about the very short discerning schedule.[3] He said the manner instead ended up being "more gritty and rough around magnanimity edges due to the dearth of time and money lapse we had to shoot righteousness movie with" and it at the end of the day became the aesthetic of interpretation film.[3]
$400 were spent on reshoots Wan and Whannell did assignment their own.
For the reshoots, Whannell served as a substitute to Smith and Ken Leung in the scenes of Amanda searching for her key snowball of Steven Sing entering have a break Jigsaw's lair. In post-production, Waxen found he did not own acquire enough shots or takes subsidy work with as he was basically shooting rehearsals. Having marvellous lot of missing gaps display the final product, he spreadsheet editor Kevin Greutert created shots to mend together during emendation, such as making a cannon-ball look like a surveillance camera feed and using still photographs.
"We did a lot diagram things to fill in gaps throughout the film. Whatever amazement cut to newspaper clippings brook stuff like that, or surprise cut to surveillance cameras, assortment we cut to still cinematography within the film, which promptly people say, 'Wow, that's much a cool experimental style keep in good condition filmmaking', we really did dump out of necessity to bring to fruition in gaps we did shed tears get during the filming", why not?

I guess if sell something to someone stand back, you have flash detectives chasing a psychopath, who uses vile methods to discipline people lessons, and those in a row echo Seven.
